The strength of my voice.
When I was in my First Turn and learning about myself, my voice was rooted in expertise. Did I really know what I was talking about? Could I prove the point I needed to make?
When I moved to Turn Two,
and we initiated Design Group International, my voice shifted to leadership. Could I inspire and communicate effectively about mission, vision, and values so that what we were building would actually get built?
Now, as a company Founder and living in my Third Turn, I'm noticing how strong my voice is even when I am not speaking. Say something, say nothing. Make a statement or ask a question. It all gets noticed. So, now, I am learning about judicious and wise use of my voice, touching on things lightly and far less frequently.
Each of these stages is hard -- moving from growing expertise to serving as a leader to becoming a repository of wise and softly-spoken counsel. This has been among the most difficult of lessons to pass, and I keep tripping over the doorway into the land of "so much to learn." And yet, with each trip and resulting bruise, I am learning, and wisdom's seed is sprouting.
