Board members are not born understanding how to govern. Neither are they prepared to govern because they bring a needed perspective to the board, because they are a major donor, or because they run a successful enterprise. Governance attends to the mission, vision, values, and policies that define ends and boundaries of the organization. By them the executive leadership of the organization can operate accordingly. If the board does not do this work, no-one else will. If the board does not recruit, educate or prepare itself accordingly, it will not govern effectively.
