3 Keys to a Successful Referral
Notes from May 2011 Presentation
For greater success when involved a professional referral, I invite you to consider these 3 concepts:
- SET: Think Volleyball.
I recently received a referral that worked out very well. When I looked back at the events that led to the introduction, it made me think of the position of “Setter” in Volleyball. My colleague did an amazing job to “set” or prepare the prospects for the lead. He identified the need, made sure it was a good fit for both parties, and in turn achieved a smooth transition in the introduction and referral process.
If you are setting up a referral, take time to prepare the way and make sure that the conditions are right. Also take the time to share any insights that will aid your colleague in selecting the best solution for the client.
- SIMPLE: Be flexible and uncomplicated.
Listen to your prospect closely and meet their needs in a ways that are convenient and easy for them to adopt to and understand. Not only will they will appreciate it, but it will build trust. It will also make the approval process go smoothly.
- STEADY: Be responsive and keep things moving.
It is very important that you clearly express your requirements to keep the project moving along. Be generous in taking the time to communicate your expectations, your accomplishments, and in adding value — every step of the way.
If you are the recipient of the referral, here are some additional tips for your success:
- Be Thankful.
Show your appreciation and express your gratitude by:
- Saying “Thank You” by email to both your referral source and your prospect / new client.
- Writing a “Thank You” note to everyone involved.
- Being highly professional and having a strong start and a strong finish. (If applicable: When a referral fee is expected, be timely with your payment.)
- Make them proud.
Remember that your reputation, as well as the referring party’s reputation is on the line. Be intentional about strengthening both your image and theirs.
- Return the favor.
Look for opportunities where you can reciprocate the same kind of thoughtful referrals — keeping in mind that quality is better than quantity.

3 Steps to Maximize Your Presence Online
Notes from October 2010 Presentation
Why should you care to improve your image through your web page?
- You want to make sure you Showcase you passion and expertise
- You want to Strengthen your credibility
- You want to be strategic about your content for Search engine optimization
Most people will not come to your office, but anyone can come to your web page.
You want a page that is 1) visually stimulating 2) tells a story 3) keeps it simple
Make sure you are answering these questions with your target audience in mind:
WHO
- Who are you? What would your target audience want to know about you?
- Tell them in a professional, yet approachable tone
- Strive to be concise, intriguing and memorable
WHAT
- What do you do? What is your expertise?
- Tell them where you perform best
- Give them an example – through a brief case study, testimonials, and/or graphics
WHEN
- When should they call you?
- What issues or problems can you help them fix?
- Why should they call you, and not someone else?
Points to remember:
- Talk their language. How are they searching for you? What terms do they use to refer to your products and services?
- If your bio is written in third person, try including a quote written from your perspective
- Keep it light, share your uniqueness, but keep enough to yourself that they’ll want to ask for more information … and make sure you help them contact you - leave them with a call to action.
