The Muse: A new prayer for dedicating a church building

The following prayer is the most frequently requested item I've written. We recently removed it from the Design Group International store, and decided to make it public domain. We will do the same thing in the next blog post with a related prayer:  "New prayer for a congregational spending plan."

A new prayer for dedicating a church building

O Lord,new prayer for a church building

You are the creator and builder of the church.

As we now use this building as a house of worship, help us remember this building is only a tool, and we your people, are the church you choose to build.

May our (pews/seats) become worn in worship.

May our carpets show the stains of educating our children in Christian faith and fellowshipping together.

May our windows become smudged from many tiny hands.

May our parking lot collect the gravel from many car tires.

May our hymnal covers and seats become worn from so much use.

May our utility bills reflect the fact that this building is seldom unused.

And when it becomes time to remodel or refurbish, may we be speedy and generous to do so, always remembering that we, your people, are the church, and that this building is only a tool.

May we worship you and not it.

Amen.
